I was employed at a small consultancy, where I was in dialogue with Jan Wolff from ProData Consult about using my former employer as a subcontractor for some projects. found a six-month project. Things moved fast. I sent a CV on Monday, and I was called in for an interview a week later. On my way home from the interview, ProData Consult called to tell me it was a match. Three or four days later, I started on my very first project as a consultant.
My greatest fear as a new consultant was that I would have to get out there and sell myself, which I wasn’t interested in. Because I’m affiliated with ProData Consult, I don’t need to, because they’re established on the market and have a large client database. Another advantage is that billing works perfectly.

In January I chose to quit my full-time job in order to become a freelance consultant. I needed to be able to seek out the challenges and projects, that are good matches for me – and not just be a part of one company's pipeline. As a full-time employee you are not always the one best suited to accomplish a specific task. As a consultant I can take on projects where I get to exploit my talents in an optimal way.
But projects don’t grow on trees so I started uploading my resume to different IT consulting firms. ProData Consult was the first to call. I am given assignments that fit my experience and expertise
The first time I heard of ProData Consult, it was from a friend who had been a consultant for ProData for several years. Since I was looking to go freelance at the time, I applied for assignments through ProData.
In the recruiting process, my contacts with the consultancy house gave me the impression of a very systematic and professional firm. The process was surprisingly swift and there were no unpleasant surprises. Absolutely, ProData seemed like the right place to be associated with.
PDC worked very hard to find assignments for me, but I came in at a very inopportune moment, right at the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008. There was not a lot of call for freelancers, but they still managed it after a brief waiting period. There have been several good offers since the first assignment.

Waarom als een onafhankelijk consultant werken?
Ben je op zoek naar een grotere variatie in je projecten? Wil je een grotere invloed hebben op het kiezen van de projecten waarvoor je wil werken? Dan is een job als zelfstandig consultant een oplossing voor jou. Als consultant krijg je:
- meer vrijheid om je eigen projecten te kiezen
- een beter loon - Je kan 50 tot 100% meer verdienen (maar denk eraan dat je zelf instaat voor je vakantiegeld en je pensioen)
- een dynamische carrière met veel afwisseling en leuke uitdagingen
- de mogelijkheid om een verschil te maken in het bedrijf van de klant.
Samen met de vele mogelijkheden die een loopbaan als zelfstandig consultant voor je openen, zijn er ook enkele uitdagingen: je moet in staat zijn om snel je weg te vinden in een nieuwe organisatie, je moet je verantwoordelijkheid durven nemen en snel resultaten tonen. Als je deze manier van werken onder de knie hebt, dan maak je veel kans om te kunnen genieten van een carrière als onafhankelijk consultant.
Van werknemer tot zelfstandig consultant
Ben je vast aangesteld, heb je meer dan vijf jaar ervaring als een business of IT-consultant en ben je geïnteresseerd om een onafhankelijke consultant te worden? Wij helpen je graag bij het vinden van je eerste project. We kunnen je echter niet helpen als je aangesteld bent bij één van onze klanten.
Hoe omgaan met de overgang van werknemer naar zelfstandig consultant:
- De veiligste manier
Schrijf je in en vul je CV in met ProData Consult. Dien je ontslag niet in totdat je zeker bent van je eerste opdracht. Bij deze manier moet de klant bereid zijn om te wachten tot je opzegtermijn afgelopen is. Dit betekent dat het even kan duren tot je je eerste opdracht vindt, omdat de meerderheid van de klanten consultants zoeken die op korte termijn aan de slag kunnen gaan.
- De snelste manier
Schrijf je in en vul je CV met ProData Consult in. Dien je ontslag in en informeer ProData Consult wanneer je beschikbaar bent voor projecten. Dit maakt het makkelijker voor ons om je aan de klanten te verkopen waardoor je sneller je eerste opdracht binnen zal halen. Bij deze aanpak is het financiële risico natuurlijk wel groter.
Het is belangrijk om je huidige arbeidsovereenkomst op een eerlijke en fatsoenlijke manier te beëindigen. Beëindig alle lopende projecten en maak jezelf beschikbaar. Als onafhankelijk IT-consultant ben je afhankelijk van je netwerk en je huidige werkgever kan dus op een dag je toekomstige klant worden.
Je moet zelfstandig zijn
Omdat consultancy contracten tussen bedrijven en niet tussen particulieren worden afgesloten, moet je als zelfstandige geregistreerd worden. Dit betekent onder andere het volgende:
- je moet bedrijf registreren
- je moet een rechtsvorm kiezen - eenmanszaak of vennootschap - er zijn voor- en nadelen bij beide opties.
- je moet vertrouwd raken met de regels inzake belastingen en aftrek, evenals andere financiële aspecten van het zelfstandig ondernemerschap
- je moet beslissen of je al dan niet met een boekhouder wil samenwerken.
Wij raden aan om met een boekhouder te werken
Omgaan met alle aspecten van het zelfstandig ondernemerschap kan ingewikkeld zijn, daarom raden wij aan om met een boekhouder samen te werken en dit vooral als je net begint als zelfstandig consultant. Een boekhouder kan helpen bij het verduidelijken van je opties en kan je adviseren. Naarmate je meer vertrouwd raakt met de regels, heb je misschien geen nood meer aan een boekhouder.
